So I think it was Entity that mentioned something a few days ago that Subway was going all-halal on their foods at almost 200 locations in the UK.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2616576/Subway-removes-ham-pork-nearly-200-stores-strong-demand-Muslims-eat-Halal-meat.html And recently Dan Edge mentioned that a restaurant chain called Pizza Express has been serving halal products this whole time http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/10812696/Pizza-Express-reveals-halal-meat-used-in-all-chicken-dishes.html Anybody have any particular thoughts on this? So far the majority of the halal products available in the US are independent businesses, with the exception of a few franchises starting to emerge. Apparently one Subway restaurant is all Halal here in Houston, TX, and that may increase.

I think Sc@r had a beat-down on the idea too.
I have no issue with religion, but there are things involved with it that often I disagree with on an equality or ethical ground. For example, with equality, girls should have the same education and opportunities as boys.
As for this halal thing, I don't like it simply because of how the animal dies, but looking at it next to how we make animals live before we slaughter them, it's not so bad. The off-putting thing is that often they can take hours to bleed out a small puncture wound in the neck. I've seen videos of it floating around and it's sickening. I understand that it's sacred, but if people want halal, they can go to a halal meat store. This city's filled to the brim with them. It shouldn't be something that is universal because, simply put, this isn't a Muslim country.
Subway doing this will technically open up a whole new demographic to their products, but they've forgotten the sensitivity there is around this. They think people will eat meat regardless of how it's obtained, but halal, by definition draws a light onto the bleak side of food.
Muslims can't consume blood, so the still living animal has to pump it all out. However, the Qu'ran says that the animal has to be treated with respect and not suffer, and to be honest, it probably doesn't much. It simply faints once blood doesn't reach the brain.
You throw that next to a typical western battery cage for chickens and you realise that halal's far more humane. We cramp chickens up so much they never learn how to use their legs, they simply shit where they sit until they're electrocuted (often unsuccessfully). That's all for the sake of making the balance sheet look bigger. Free range pens cost money.
On the one hand, yeah it looks and sounds bad and Subway shouldn't force it on everyone if only a minority would require it, but on the other hand, it's probably about the same with ethics - and I think ethics are the problem. If halal is bad, what we do conventionally is just as bad.

I'll keep my reply simple.
I have no problem with stores catering for cultural/religious needs.
I DO have a problem with those needs resulting in a lack of choice for me.

It is exactly the same here, there has been a large shift in people managing to keep things in perspective though. :P
As a vegetarian, it's not something that causes much of an issue for me, what all you meat eaters suddenly growing a conscience for?! ;)

The Subway & Carl's Jr in my country do serve bacon, but the Muslim's here took it easy and just looked elsewhere for other fast food outlets.
They didn't go on strike or make any noise when Subway or even Carl's Jr here don't cater to their needs at all.
Anyway, I've been eating Halal food for 6 months straight for lunch when I'm at work, not fast food but Muslim takeaways and they taste pretty awesome as compared to the food from any non-Halal eateries.
Another note is, just to let you know that the Muslims that I've met on a daily basis are very tolerant, peace-loving and respectful people, not like the image that you've always seen from the Taliban extremists.
Here's my 2 cents.

I can't pretend I care if my meat is halal or not. I've certainly never been put off by a takeaway or whatever having a halal sign. My diet consists more or less entirely of meat so I'd be screwed if I was bothered!
I have mates who are on Facebook jumping all over every little bit of news about halal, threatening to boycott this restaurant or that supermarket, etc etc, I reckon it's mostly another reason to attack Islam to be honest. They'd probably disown me if I told them, but I simply couldn't care less how my meat was killed.
It is just annoying that fucking religion defines things like this, it's pathetic.
I worked in an abbatoir for a few years (and my father did for over 20 years!) so I saw animals killed both ways, so to speak. If you seriously were reeallly that bothered you'd probably never eat meat again after seeing it. I was far from bothered.
Now excuse me, I'm off to cook a fuck off steak and chips!

If they remove the bacon from subway here in the U.S., We would start a riot.

Yeah I don't think any Muslims are particularly asking/demanding for it over here. It's just a decision that Subway have made as they think it will bring in more money. If they want to serve Halal meat that's their prerogative I guess. If it offends people then they shouldn't eat there. Don't call a witch hunt on Muslim people though just because some Subway exec decided that he wants to make more money from them.
Personally I don't really care as I must eat Halal already, a large percentage of all takeaway joints serve it in the UK. 99% of the meat I eat comes from the local butcher anyway so it's not like I'm going to go 100% Halal any time soon.

hm so lets see we have a capitalist company going its way to maximize profits. if that would mean to use only tofu meat they would do so as well.
good time to start cooking at home. cheaper, healthier and better.

I suppose it's important to note that there are only around 1500 subway franchises in the UK, so 200 is a relatively small amount and no doubt they are in areas where it would be bad business sense not to do it.
I wonder how much control, as each individual franchise, you get over the menu and foods that are used?

Every company with franchises has a different set of rules I'm sure, but I remember when I worked at Krispy Kreme donuts back in high school they had a lot of rules to adhere to as far as product goes.
Franchises were allowed to only have 15 different varieties of donuts, and that is all they offered is donuts! no bear claws, eclairs, kolaches, bagels, or whatever other pastries and whatnot were sold at the average donut or breakfast bakery place. Also the drinks were limited to just coffee, milks, and juices. Nothing fancy like cappucinos, smoothies, or other concoctions.
I remember people would complain at the lack of variety we had and would tell us that there are many Krispy Kreme shops in other parts of the US that had everything. I later find out that those are not part of a franchise and individually owned, and those shops had more freedom to do what they wanted.
Subway franchises can't be too strict it seems, since I mentioned earlier that there's a halal-meat franchise starting here in Houston. Subway I guess is willing to work out with individual franchises than other companies are.
