I absolutely hate to offload family crap on here but I'm kind of freaking out. My grandpa has gone from being a 94-year-old farmer (still working) to being hospitalised for the past few weeks because his esophagus became paralysed, preventing him from eating or drinking. It seemed like he was improving over the past weeks but all of a sudden his health has just started tanking and it has hospital staff extremely concerned. It's starting to affect my grandma's mental health as well. It's the first time anything like this has happened on my mom's side on the family (dad's side I could give ****-all about). As stupid as it sounds I don't know how to deal with this.

I suggest you let those closest to you know exactly how you're feeling. Don't isolate yourself from their direct guidance. I know coming on a forum will get you advice but I suggest that you start by sticking close to your loved ones. Hope it all works out. ;)

Yeah just try and talk to your close relatives and friends about it. Never going to be easy though. I've lost a fair bit of family now including my mum plus a few friends my age and it's always tough.

He passed about thirty minutes ago, I think about seven hours after I saw him. No idea what caused it; all I know is that the paralysis had been spreading into the bottom section of his lungs. When I last saw him he was ranting about how he wanted to be fixing one of his tractors instead of sitting around in the hospital. Fcuking hell he was tough.

I'm not really feeling anything at the moment so it's probably going to hit me later... not looking forward to that.

Also thanks for the advice, I'm trying to stick as close as possible.

What a legend.

As for dealing with it. Well, there's obviously no guide book or 'How To' on the subject. Well, maybe there is - but it's not the same for everyone. People say time's a heeler. Not sure I agree with that per se. The stuff that you do in the time that follows is the key. If you sit around doing nothing - your psychological health isn't really going to improve. That said, there is something strangely masochistically satisfying about sitting around and really getting in to the depression of the situation. It's also a mark of respect to the person that's been lost, I guess - that their passing causes such breakdown.

However, once you've got that initial shit out of your system - find someone that knew him like you did, and that's in a similar stage of recovery. Then just tell hilarious stories about him together. Gets you laughing. Gets you out of the "Fcuk, he's gone" phase to "Man, that guy was awesome, gonna miss him" phase.

R.I.P.

He was just hardcore; working as 94 year old man and ranting about not being able to work on his tractor is really unique.

R.I.P. and sorry for your lost

94 years and to be that lucid, sounds like he had a pretty good run, I'd say.

My condolences to you, Chris.
