and America doesn't, due to Cultural difference between Britain and America?
I have heard that Americans wouldn't stand for the kind of BS we have to put up with in the UK/Limeyland.
Your thoughts?

No, you can boil the reasons nicely down to #1 Size and #2 The way our system was/is set up.

The TV license is down to the fact that the BBC is essentially 'state' television and doesn't carry adverts. It's no different to paying a sky subscription, apart from there's no choice. And to be honest I don't mind it because I like the stuff the BBC does.

At least the BBC makes an effort to give you guys quality programming. Television programming in the U.S. in general sets the bar as low as the Mariana trench, and that's not including how it feels like it's 50% adverts.

it's got nothing to do with a cultural difference....
adverts piss me off & on bbc we dont have to put up with adverts every 10 minutes
saying that, i'd rather they did so i didnt have to pay the licencing fee... saying that...
they can waste their money & advertise lynx all day long.... i aint buying it... it's shite

that's not something that exists only in the UK. Sweden also has it. but they are trying to change it to a "multimedia" service. So if you can listen to/watch state channels on the radio, TV or the computer. you'll pay for it.

We just converted the TV licence into Media Tax, now everyone has to pay it, even if you don't have a TV. So i just lost about 200e/year.
As on the topic, PBS is partly funded by US tax payers.

That's a bummer whispering!
I get the feeling blackcrow just made the original statement up to start a conversation. like whispering says, PBS, public broadcasting is partially funded by US taxpayers; but more to the point is daft as if saying anyone anywhere "wouldn't stand" for paying taxes, silly, all modern societys happy bend over and get shafted for taxes by their govenment, some taxes more stupid than others...

I don't even own a TV so don't pay for a TV license.
for us brits
For those who don't know, Remember. You are allowed to watch catch up services like iPlayer as long the programme isn't being broadcast 'live' at the same time (being transmitted as it being shown on TV) so that is basically two digits up to the TV license people.

Exception: If you only watch catch-up services online, then you dont need a licence. For example, you don't need one to use BBC iPlayer, or ITV player, to catch up on programmes after they have been shown on TV.

yeah you don't actually have to pay the license at all ^
problem is in our house is my wife is insistant on keeping it, even though the majority of time is spent on iplayer using the bluray player and steaming movies from the server..... duh
I think its every 5 or so years they have to review it, the next review is in 2016 I think...I don't think it will last, the digital age is well upon us, and with all laws in england, once they're outdated, we review them, have a referendum if needed..and get them changed as per what the people want. I don't think the people will want to keep paying it past 2021 personally.
I'm actually quite proud of the UK to be honest, I think we do a really good job at pulling together when it comes to rules and regulations, generally, perhaps because we're a small island nation there is a public consensus over "major" issues and because those are out of the way we get down and dirty and argue about stupid shit like food laws, wind turbines and building on green land hehe

Interesting. I did not know that. Although I'm pretty sure no one is buying a TV license to watch stuff online anyway.

^this is true but you still have to have one if you are recording programmes as it's being transmitted or if you are watching it on live rewind (when you pause the programme and then play it) as this is still technically a live transmission

Considering the way we watch media is drastically changing it wouldn't surprise me if the UK Government did something similar to a multimedia or media tax within the next few years. Everyone, almost, seems to watch catch-up TV on their smartphone, tablet device or PC these days or failing that, they download them now from places like iTunes and watch them when it suits them.
The way we see multimedia is changing drastically.
