Its been a while since I dragged everyone into something else I love. These days it is the Paranormal Activity films. Some people seem to love them, others hate them and others have never been able to sleep since! Whats everyone's veiws on these films?
I have to say I love horrors or thrillers but alot of them can be repetitive and only good the first few times. Pararnormal Activity seems to break all the rules and has to be one of the best such films of late!
So what you all think?

It's a lot of hit and miss really. If you lose yourself in the moment, then you'll find it worth your while. It's similar in style to the first Blair Witch Project. If you didn't like Blair Witch Project, then you probably won't like these.

I thought paranormal activity was excellent.
It wasn't "shock" value like a lot of other horror films, it was more that it left you feeling very, VERY uncomfortable. That's what i liked about it. It slowly built and built in increments at a time with just the right levels of creepy to keep you wanting to watch more without giving you too much at once and then ruining it.
But i find with horrors people either like them or they don't. Like was said, people who can find they can "lose" themselves in the situation will appreciate it MUCH more than someone who can't. I always find it's better to watch by yourself, late at night, with all the lights off. Preferably you being the only person in the house.
I'm actually very on board with this with you smoogs.

Yea that's how I watched the first one, and I definitely appreciated it. I wasn't that much feeling the 2nd one, but I saw the 3rd one in a movie theater (and it was matinee so me and this group of 3 were the only ones in there) and that one was pretty good as well.

Terrible. Among the worst films I've ever seen and I watch a lot of them. Slow as hell, nothing happens, it's not tense, it's not clever, it's not scary. Utter rubbish. Didn't even bother with 2 or 3.

One of te biggest things about the film is there is no music. In most horrors there is that 'scary musci' build up before something makes you jump but the PA series lacks this so you are there in darkness waiting for something to happen and when stuff does happen you least expect it. One of the more lighter scenes in the third one os where the mother jumps out of the cupboard with a scary mask on which made the whole cinima jump. The other scenes are much more unsettling though such as the famous 'Bloody Mary' scene and when Katie gets dragged by an invisible force into the loft space.
You never see the demon itself which is what plays a major part in the film as in any horror, once you have seen the thing that is haunting you no longer fear it. The fear is of the unknown nd the unseen which is what makes me love these films as it leave you feeling very confused wanting to see even more!

Paranormal? No. It's all perfectly normal. It's around us, everywhere, all of the time.

You either love or hate these sort of films. Though, they're definitely not terrible by any measure of the word. You might not actually like the end result but the cinematography, direction, acting, plot are all decent (ish). There's a reason why it was an indie film that was (later) picked up by spielberg (i think?) and a studio.
Seeing both the first and the second one in cinemas, i can tell you that there was quite a range of demographics there and everyone was scared. Actually, in the second one the only people who i saw who werent scared were these two 13 or 14 year old girls in front of us chatting on their phones the whole time. Obviously, if you go into a fiction-based movie with a constant reminder of reality, you're not going to be immersed in anything. But they were kicked out to applause from the rest of the theatre, who continued all to jump and be scared afterwards.
I'm just saying, some people don't like this genre of film. That doesn't mean it's bad.
But i will say, your scope of what is a rubbish film is WAY off. Go and watch 'The Room' directed by Tommy Wiseau. It'll give you some base line for what is a terrible film.

Thats what anyone would think after watching it alone, and looking behind them and jumping at every noise.

Just like in Alfred Hitchcock's "The birds".
