Generally speaking, I didnt like that we invited the Olympics to a country up to its eyeballs in debt, because we've spent money we won't see a return on. It seems to me like we're trying to prove a point to the world, and we've done this to prove we can still put on a good show, we have military might and that our country is something to be proud of. Watching the ceremony back, I did feel proud.
What we saw was a British performance. Everything done by us, and to see that is rare these days. British need helping making cars, our football clubs are being bought out by the big Asian tycoons, we can't provide our own natural resources any more, we can't win wars without the UN or NATO, and we've very much lost our own sense of identity. What the ceremony proved to the world was that we can do things properly and alone. The ceremony was stunning, and while some of it was boring, some of it was magnificent. It was about our heritage, our history, our pride, and it had Underworld providing one of the most iconic soundtracks I've ever heard.
While there's a lot of money being spent, I think Britain really did need something special to spark a little patriotism and pride. Something to put smiles back on a country that's been strife with economic, social and political problems over the past 4 years.
I think it'd have been more of a shame NOT to spend all the money "because of the world we live in". To not spend the money for fear of not being able to afford it and missing out on all this I think would have been a big shame. The right mentality has gone about a project that we could have been far more reserved and budgeted far more heavily. Its the classic British mindset of 'if a jobs worth doing'. I can understand why Scots may feel its all about the English and the way we see the British Isles, but at no point was it ever stated that it was about just us. We're in this together. There was as much blue in that stadium as there was red.

I loved this opening. I never thought something that spectacular could happen without a single mistake I noticed. I loved Rowan Atkinson the most, he managed to play his MrBean role perfectly. And that dirigent was acting like if it was real Mr Bean lol.
Do you know what I was thinking about all the time? I was wondering how it would look in Croatia, with Croatian organization. Ceremony would be late. structures coming-out wouldn't be synchronized. It would be crap lol.
Remember when James Bond and fake Queen base-jumped from a helicopter with a parachute, and then real queen came in in normal route with her general? If it was made in Croatia, The helicopter would be late and after 5 minutes the host would say "the next stage will be little late" and it would take 10 more minutes for the helicopter to come. In the meantime the real queen would already get to her sitting position.

LOL ok I'll just ignore the comment from the guy who comes from a country who made the rest of the world miss out on 3 Summer Olympics and 2 Winter Olympics.
Hahaha! When in doubt, bring up the war!
Warnman must have forgot to take his meds today.
And don't get me started on 'Mr Grumpy of Australia'....
Lol has nothing to do with doubt its just a ridiculous claim to make. The olympics aren't as easily "bought" ad let's say FIFA. With the exception of the nagano and salt lake city olympics. There was evidenced of those bribes found later on after host city selection. But before that it was common practice to treat IOC voters to perks. However I can see sochi buying their way into that win lol.
I think warman is still feeling butthurt that munich lost to peyonghaing (I know I spelled that wrong). But I think they mostly lost because they don't want another repeat of the 1972 Munich games massacre. That imo is more plausible than north Korea causing trouble during the games.

I dont get why everyone is being so negative. Everyone in the UK and across the world is enjoying it. If you dont like it then dont watch it. Simple
I love irony. And I don't have a connected TV at my place, so...
Anyway.

I have been against the application of Munich for the Winter Games and Leipzig for this year's Summer Games all the time. And I mentioned the World Cup 2006 as well, because my opinion is that it was a mistake to choose Germany. Being a normal football supporter I had been faced with the overflowing police brutality against well behaving supporters in the years before 2006. I have realised the limit of human rights for visitors of a football match and the censorship in our media during this event.
I'm not proud that such an event took place in my country.

Ignore it, DMS! There's no way to offend me this way. I simply guess the rubbishy educational system of the U.S. leave out or glorify events like the "Wounded Knee Massacre" as an important necessary part in history of the conquest of "god's own country".
