hello everybody!
i wasnt just shootin' shit when i said i would do a site as an alternative to ishkars "guide"
ive spent the last week or so in flash and dreamweaver/photoshop putting it together :)
the site as a whole is basically finished - but this is where i thought (unlike ishkar) i would hand it over to you guys to see what YOU think music wise should be on there
the actual website aside...here is the "genre-map" as it stands that will be on it!
http://www.stopcallingittechno.com/genremap read this next part very carefully before you post The "genre-map" is NOT supposed to be comprehensive, its got the "main" Genres a basic listener will come across, then under each of those styles, a small selection of the main subgenres. Its not there to teach history, not there to insult anyones tastes, not there to make up new styles nobodys even heard of, its a small stepping stone, and a slight nudge toward helping people give up the ol "techno" obsession. any of the wording can be changed - ive tried to keep it as non-biased as i can - and kept the information as short as possible - but giving enough so that a user doesnt become confused. no illusion will be made on the site about what i just said, it will be in the "info" section laying it all out, honestly. so, thoughts first off? and second off you have the "main" genres there at the top, each play button works and has an example on it. what would your choices be? Chillout House Trance Garage Trance Techno HardStyle Drum N Bass Hardcore remember, they have to sound different enough - no crossover stuff, what song would best represent each style do you think, completely fresh listener! if you feel inspired, the subgenres are in the flash too (there are subgenres that are missing - or perhaps the you think should be added - but not so many as the user becomes confused! lol) the genre-map is not finished, a few things need fixing and tweeking (stop buttons need to reset, preloader needs to be added) but if you press play on a play button, it will load a snippit of a song farily quickly, depending on your connection speed.. shit thats alot of writing - didnt mean it to be that long!

i'm really liking it. deep blue made me smile as well, what a tune..
are the samples yet to be added of the sub-genres?
few things i would say though;
i'd go for a more anthemic tune for trance, like
"hear you calling" - aurora..
or something along those lines
i think theres a progressive subgenre for techno (theres a progressive subgenre for everything though :P) but thats from a vague memory haha
i'd pick something harder for drum and bass.. like "taken" - dc breaks
something like that... and the only other subgenres of drum and bass i know are hard drum and bass and 2-step
hope this helps and can;t wait to see it finished!
after reading it all i sound a bit preachy there :s i'm not trying to be..

Lookin good so far!
Trance obviously needs Carte Blanche somewhere ;)
DnB could use some jump up, as far as I know, that's one of the most popular types, e.g. DJ Hazard & Distorted Minds - Mr. Happy
Techno needs Jeff Mills - The Bells, even if it is in Ishkur's guide, too. Such a classic.

where's the disclaimer?
nothing wrong with subfocus but I would have picked something with some more breakbeat action in it

:D great feedback so far - theres a few features im going to add in, in bottom right on each genre there will be a box with slow scrolling writing (like credits) with the words "big names in ** genre" and that list can be as big as!
as for the disclaimer - it will link to something along the lines of "we know these arent all the genres blah blah blah, somthing to stop people complaining when they see that a certain subgenre or what not is on there, just to let people know its for the basic beginner etc etc :)
going to be working on it more today, get those extra features in - get those play buttons correct (they really need to reset themselves!!!)
and yep - samples still need to be added to the sub sub genres ;) any song suggestions im pasting into a notepad and will check out most voted for at the end of the week!

Adding UK Hardcore and freeform and ditching Makina and HHC wasnt good IMO. Because Freeform is UK Hardcore.
I did a small thing at school on Hardcore years ago, i'll try to find the CD and post what tunes I used... I could also give you a sample list on Eurotrance?

hehe - whispering, i was counting on you for the euro-trance ;)
as far as UK hardcore and freeform go - i felt dirty writing UK hardcore as im not really confortable with the term "uk" in the first place, but freeform has been around for 10+ years now and i think it deserves its own genre, specially as it is a darker side (more techno based!) than .."uk" hardcore, but i know where you are coming from
happy hardcore also - i really feel that should be on there...
and its not a hate thing that makina wasnt on there, its more a space issues thing, honestly the makina sound is definatly separate enough to have its own place in that section - so we'll definatly juggle that section up until everyone is happy! more opinions on it the better!

i think you need to re-read the first post :P
the whole point is that all the genres arent there! :)
we could always make a fully comprehensive one - but like i said in the first post
this is for someone fleating through dance music, not to overwhelm them like ishkars does
its "stop calling it techno"
one can expect people to remember the main styles, but to remember the 50,000 pigeon holed styles after that is too much and too confusing!

30seconds, 192kbps :)
they might be bumped to a marginally lower quality at the end though, just see how things go!
