I've heard of ableton, but I don't use it.

In fact, the program I use has all sorts of beatmatching auto things, but here's the kicker, it rarely works. So, in my olde ignorant days of "DJ'ing" I used the beatsync function and everything sounded shitty.

In fact, with hardcore it's almost impossible for it to work. Luckily, this program lets you useit like turntables the way VirtualDJ does as well. I constantly have to tweak everything to get it sounding right, and I cue to match the beats and everything. I never use any auto beat sync.

Everything in my mixes are manual...I use about 10 percent of the program that I have.

So don't start dissing me, because I know how to DJ, and I don't just sit back and let the program work, I am constantly adjusting everything and tweaking to get the beats to match up...

Like Samination says it really doesnt matter. Aslong as your doing a good job and people like what your doing then who cares. I've known Saminationf for about a year now, doesn't mean I don't rate him as a DJ beacuse he uses VDJ.

Software, Vinyl, CD's, Gramophone...as long as your comfortable with what your using it doesn't matter.

If "fans" hold prejudices against a DJ because they exclusivley use software or CD's ect, then they arn't fans atall. I used to have a low opinion of people who used software to mix, and CD's too. But I've tried them both, and they're both harder than they look. I have respect for them as DJ's alot more now.

I have seen/do know how to use ableton (the basics), and yes when you do know HOW to use it and with plenty of practice it can mix just aswell as cd/vinyl.

you were making it seem incredable that it will mix everything for you perfectly at the click of a button.

in short using ableton or any other software does require quite some considerable experiance and skill to get amazing results from it.

you said it yourself "Once you understand how to work it" and thus forth i rest my case. software DJ'ing isnt as easy as ppl would belive.

on another point, deing a DJ doesent just mean how well u can beat match its also about making the set, taking the crowd where u want them to go.. and alot more wich isnt technical in anyway.

As ive learned so far there actually quite some artistry to being a good DJ.

From once being a software DJ myself, and comparing it to how I learned to DJ on turntables... yes it is.

You can make it as easy or as hard as you want. The software these days can do many things and it all depends on how much of it you use.

And to the earlier comment about it not mattering how you do it but only if it sounds good and the fans like it... I disagree.
Ripping artists off like Rankin and Cammy was easy enough, and sounded good enough to many people, but saying it doesnt matter is wrong.

The truth is using software in some ways (not all!) is a shortcut to making mixes. And there is no way you can tell how much skill was involved in making the mix by only listening to it. So really this argument can go on forever.

The only way this argument can go on forever is if people INSIST on comparing "Skills of a True DJ" by way of his software, in direct relation with his turntables.

-If you watch a DJ LIVE and hes using software, I'd say he SUCKS at mixing. period. If hes using cdj's or vinyl at least you know he has to set his own eq leves, beatmatch, and transition correctly.
-If a dude from his (home or studio) makes a mix, who cares what he used. At least its a free hardcore mix to listen to.

I dont ever ever ever wanna go to an event I paid cash for and watch my favorite dj use freakin software! use the tables! (cdjs or vinyl)

To the original poster. Good luck with your planned purchases and have some fun :D

Great Point. My question now is, You respect a DJ who uses software. Thats good. But what about seeing it live? That would bug me. But if its a person who made a cd and says 'here ya go i made a mix' , i might not be so inclined to be so skeptical about software mixes. its free tuneage to me:D

Vinyl is the best way to go because you have alot more selection
the "best" tracks only come out on vinyl right now

(minus a few exceptions)

Ideally you should get both though.

As for software mixing...with a console it's pretty much like using cd decks
Beatmatching might be automatic but beatmatching is also the easiest thing about DJing so let's not get too excited

Often PC DJs don't seem to EQ their mixes as well though...probably due to not using hardware controllers most of the time.

I'm also skeptical about all the PC DJs I know of that play tracks I know for a fact are only released on vinyl...

(although I guess the same goes for the cd djs which I know for a fact own no vinyl or turntables and have recorded mixes with like 90% of tracks solely released on vinyl)

I find it awesome to see DJs like Brisk or Marc Smith mix it up on either vinyl or CD
I probably wouldn't be too excited to hear a computer do it because of the fact I'm a DJ but the average raver wouldn't notice anything different

I would agree with this, if I went to a rave and someone was using software mixing programs for anything other than a live PA I'd be cheesed (not that any promoter would hire anyone to do this ATM). When it comes to mixing at home for fun, compilation CD's or internet download/radio it really doesn't bother me what people choose to mix with TBH.

In terms of the whole Vinyl - CD thing it really makes little difference, choose the one you feel is best for you. Best bet is to have both these days.
