I think I know the basics, but my dad wants me to record his vinyl to CD's and I wouldn't mind being able to do that either.
Is it as difficult as everyone says? Do I really need Pro Tools or summat?
Could someone lay it out for me, assuming I have nothing and know nothing (that may or may not be true...)

its easy enough to rip audio from vinyl to pc in my experiance, its another thing getting quality audio though
what you need is a pc - which you seem to have :P, and a mixer, and u have one of those too. so all thats left is a soundcard with a line in, do you have this? you need a program like audacity (google it) to record the audio, and a lead to hook your mixer to your pc, have a look on maplin for one of these, it will be phono at one end, and jack at the other
thats pretty much it, once u have them you just need to buy some patience :)

Some sound cards have the rca input.
If not, the Y cord JaXoN is on about is what you need.
One end is 1/4" connector which you will plug into the microphone input on your sound card, the other end is the double rca you hook to the mixer (which im sure you know).
For good quality also make sure the recording software has the high kbps range. Anything 192+ kbps is *high quality*.

Thanks, I have everything but the sound card with the line in.
What about mastering the recording?
Is that difficult?
BTW, isn't Audacity awesome?

microphone wont do, it will have to be "line in" other wise you will get utter shite quality
if you are going to buy a soundcard with rca input id suggest the m audio 2496, it costs about £60 inc vat and delivery in the uk so you should get it a bit cheaper in the us. you could always buy it new, and sell it second hand on ebay, from what ive seen they dont depreciate much, so you might only end up paying like £15 to use it then pass it on

I get fantastic results with mixcraft and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Don't forget to have all the eq's on your mixer flat if your doing unmixed single track rips.

Jaxon, is it possible to do it with the line in on my Powerbook, and/or is it at all possible with the powerbook?
Do, I have to use a desktop?

Wow, I just did some research on my own, and I find this thing called iMic, basically gives you a stereo line in and out for your mac, plugs into USB!
BRILLIANT!
Also, it has this free program called Finyl Vinyl...I can plug the turntables directly into the computer, without the need for a mixer or pre amp. It can interpret the audio and is surprisingly easy to use.
Furthermore, the cord is only 40 USD!
Now, all I need is a new needle and I'm good to go! Vinyl, here I come!

Numark has a cheap version of that. The name slipped my mind but it's half blue half silver.
And JaXoN, I started out recording mixes with a microphone line in and it worked perfectly for me. Maybe It was the software I was using. Also the cord was a high quality 'Monster' cable. But whatever works :P
