One major piece of advice would be to not bother with a beat counter. If you want to be able to mix you need to know how to without the aid of a beat counter (there wont be one at any clubs you get booked for!).
What sort of price range are you looking at?

I agree with what your saying about needing to be able to mix without a BPM counter
but the bit about no club having one puzzles me
the industry stand mixer imo is the pioneer DJM600 which has a BPM counter
and the industry standard CD decks are the pioneer CDJ1000 which again have a BPM counter

I'm really a vinyl man so I didn't even think about CDJ's but yeah that's a good point.
Most of the clubs round my way use Allen & Heath mixers and I've never noticed a BPM counter on any of them. The only other mixer I've used in a club round here is a german make (I think?) can't remember the name, Again no BPM counter as far as I noticed... So my point could still stand if she was using vinyl.

but your still right bulby, almost every model ive seen (granted their not the MOST expensive models out there) never has an accurate beatcounter. My digital reads always fluctuate. I have no clue how accurate these bmp counters COULD be, but i have yet to see one that stands at a solid concrete precise number.
in other words charlie, dont mind too much about BPM stuff.
heres' some 3 channels to possibly consider
Gemini PS-02 3-Channel DJ Mixer with Kill Switches
Stanton SMX-401 3-Channel DJ Mixer
Numark DXM09 3-Channel

yeah to the best of my knowledge allen & heath don't have BPM counters
and charlie4u take bulby_g's advice don't buy a mixer just because it's got BPM counters you realy don't want to learn using them, it'll take more practice but once you can mix without them you'll feel you've really acheived something!!!!
I have to confess to using the BPM counter on my mixer (pioneer DJM600) ocassionaly when i've had a bit to much to drink/smoke/snort and can hardly stand, i have to say i cannot fault pioneer at all what they say the speed is it is however tunnelrush's says the cheaper mixers BPM counters aren't up to much and i'll take his word on that as i've not got much experience with them.
Basically my view on the matter is
BPM counters = cheating

I have a pioneer djm 500 (think only difference if you can cut and loop sample from recorded bit on it i think? or summit like that!) I tend not to use the bpm counter, mainly because of what tunnel rush said, you keep get different readings and it can be hard to follow and I always think, what happened if it broke? then your buggered because you dont know how to beat match without a bpm counter!
I wouldn't let it put you off gettin the mixer tho, the pioneer djm 500/600 is a great mixer BUT if you do get it, learn to beatmatch WITHOUT bpm counter

Dont get cheap poomarks faders go in no time and there generally crap.
Behringer are cheap for a reason.
$200 AUS is £80 or so.
Ive had a look on some .aus sites even the cheapest vestax is more than $200
id save some more money.
