The breakdown just a long name for the break. Where the kick and bass stops and the track goes into pads galore or whatever. What Elastic said basically :).

breakdown is when basically almost all sounds are taken out in order to give the audience some rest, so they can drink water and whatever.
after the breakdown usually there's a buildup which slowly indicates to the audience that the song is about to resume. this is where you gradually reintroduce all your instruments again and maybe add a few new.
there's more to read up on here:

hope that helped.

the break could also include beats, doesnt mean theres has to be no beats to technicaly call it a break.
say this is a 4/4 hardcore track that goes into a breakbeat section after the break:

> intro> body> break> breakdown> build> climax> outro.

Don't get a breakdown confused with a Breaks' section which as allready said by nexus can be a breakdown too. When it all comes back in, thats called a drop.

A break down is where the bass or something significant stops and then picks up later at a different pace or at the same pace making the song sound different
