You should try not to mix down on headphones, there is the proximity effect and the fact that you can't pan accuritely, because headphones are bi-mono as oppose to stereo. Whenever i have set the levels in a song on headphones, even though i think i've got everything spot on, when i listen on speakers it sounds all wrong, the main problem being that alot of things are too quiet, and the kick is too loud.
Another problem with not using monitors and a flat sound card is that the sound will always be coloured, so your hearing it after it has been EQ'd by whatever your listening on, you never really get to hear the true should sound, which is why monitors are ideal :) Like bulby_g said, they make a massive difference. In my experiance i've been able to get results in minutes on monitors that would have taken hours to get on normal speakers, and mosty, wouldn't have been able to get at all on normal speakers at all :)
