soundblaster cards are terrible for production
and for recording
they have bad DA converters and low s/n ration
and they have bad latency which is terrible for midi stuff
if you're producing get delta, echo or m-audio
soundblaster cards give accelerated audio for gaming...for everything else they suck

Totally agree with XL, they're cheap copies of decent equipement, which is why they're cheaper
and therefore not necessarily good value for money, imo.
and, bulby mate, I forgot to comment on hard synths but don't need to yet 'cos you've already sussed it, "get the hang of software first".
Very wise and cheaper.

i got some yamaha msp5's a few months ago. they're not very big but sound great, crisp and clean treble and a tight punchy sound with kicks, not very capable of handling low end basses though. I'd definitely recomend these monitors. computer music gave them 5 stars!
