lotts of memory, bigish hard drive and as fast a processor as possible....
a 64 graphics card will handle anything audio display wise u throw at it.

Yeah, I,ve been saving up for quite a while. I havn't djed before and don't really plan on making songs. It's just going to be for playing songs on the media player. I am not really into computers a lot either so can you guys please make it as understandable for me as possible

my mum bought a 400 pound laptop from tesco and even it could handle tractor dj studio with ease...if u just want something simple like that then dont spend all ur cash.

A laptop for dj'ing? If your spending that kind of money and you want to be a DJ you should get some decks.

I know I probably should by decks but I want a laptop for a while and then I'm going to buy decks. Most djs are starting to use laptops anyway. Has anyone got any names of laptops they use?

Get the very best you can afford and make sure its not an old model reduced to clear. As computers became out-dated fairly quickly.

Any ideas if I was to get decks what would be the best I could get for that price? A dj I know told me I'm mad buying a laptop. Is there anything else(accept for lights, speakers and amps) I would need?

if set on a laptop...you will need an external soundcard (usb/firewire) as the latency....(delay) in stock ones is too long...and quality is shite...
you would need software too....
e.g. www.nativeinstruments.de ----tracktor
and an external mixer is a pretty cool idea if you get into it and just have to waist that hard earned lol....
http://numark.com/products/product_view.php?v=overview&n=122 something real like that ^^ is better than most of the plasticy ones you get.

get techniks they are the best any dj with tell you so and ifthey dont they should and laptop wise a mac is great for music production but if you software only operates on microsoft then a dell laptrop or pc is ideal pentium 4 proseesor means it will run almost anything with no jiternyess or loss of graphics and it wil be good quality too

do NOT touch the technics cd decks, they suck, they're "vinyl" feel, is lost after a little use, and they sound digital to hell and back, whenever they're sold out of GC here they get returned and people buy the Pioneer CDJ1000's or the CDX insted.
anyway that to the side, you wont get any (2) of them for under $1000
-----------------------------
go for the Pioneer CDJ100 or 200's depending on what you want and how much moooooola you gots
biggest differece between the 100 and 200 is the 200 has mp3 playing capabilitys
decks.co.uk have pairs on sale for $499 (for a pair)
http://www.decks.co.uk/products/cdplayers/pioneer/cdj100 then as far as mixers go, the Pioneer DJM707 might be one to look at at under $300 http://www.decks.co.uk/products/mixers/pioneer/djm707 i like it for scratching - but you cant scratch with those cd decks...so might want to shop around a little more, even so, its a great mixer ----------------------------------------------------------------- if your going to buy a laptop, DONT buy dell, they suck, i would say 6 out of 10 computers i have to fix a day are made by dell, they spend all they're money on advertising, and then a small amount on they're hardware and user support. if yoo get a P4 inside your laptop its going to make it more expensive, (almost definatly push it past your budgit) P4's inside laptops are big and get hot real quick (very little space for them to breathe) - soon as they get to full speed, they get hot, start slowing down. Best to look models with the Athlon 64 processor inside, they take heat a little better, plus its good ol 64bit of course when it comes to desktop processors its a differnt matter if you were to scrap those ideas, you could always get turntables and a mixer, well within your budget and have some money left over for vinyl :) good luck :D
