Whenever I play online it always pairs me up with somebody abroad and the connection tends to be terrible.
What's this about? Why doesn't it pair me up with someone a little closer to home, i.e. with optimal internet connection. If I play other online multiplayer games such as COD, Battlefield etc. I don't tend to have such a problem. Is it my internet, the EA servers or the Playstation network? My NAT type is 'moderate' (type 2).
P.S. a dreadful game compared to previous editions

Ping and Servers.
EU player playing on US servers = bad ping
US player playing on AUS servers = bad ping
EU player playing on EU servers = good ping
Shitty reality of console gaming.

That makes sense. I accepted it for what it was. But I didn't know if perhaps my UPnP or firewall settings were stopping me from connecting to somebody in my local area. Would changing NAT type to 'open' (type 1) make a difference?

I'm pretty sure you can't change the NAT type. I have no router between my computer and walljack (I do have a switch), but my connection is still listed as a Type 2

It does make a positive difference. There are ways to do it :)
A simpler solution would be to change the port your wifi works on. If you use the same port as a bunch of other people in a block of flats or something, you get a much slower connection. Change it to like 33 or something random. Defaults will stick it on 7 or 11.

I play GTA on Steam too. My gaming rig cost less than a console so I was pretty happy with the build. I forget what card I have in there now, but it's mighty capable of running GTA on High HD settings at a steady 70fps. I think I have a GTX 960. Nabbed it for a tonne in the Black Fridays, but better is available for considerably more dosh. I run it with a generation 1 i3 processor, so the return is great for the value.
That's the processor - pathetic little thing, but works a treat. Magic of them is the artificial HyperThreading it can do. Makes gaming far cheaper than it needs to be.

Elipton: You could always run Speccy and take a screenshot of it and post it on imgur
