Just getting to the end of the massive Night's Dawn Trilogy:

3 massive 1200+ page books that have managed to grip me like nothing else I've ever read. Anyone have any recommendations along these lines?

Peter F Hamilton is awesome!!!! I remember reading that trilogy back when I was about 13, must admit all the raunchy stuff can be a bit too much though!

Have you read the Commonwealth Saga? If not you should get on it next: "Pandora's Star" & "Judas Unchained". I won't spoil it for you but the chapter which introduces the *villain* is such a good read :) Also following up from that one in the same universe is the Void saga/trilogy something, again very good.

I just bought his latest book before I've even finished his last one - got a lot of reading to do at Christmas!

I read Snow Crash a few years back and it was a fun read.

I wish I could find Axiomatic by Greg Egan somewhere. :(

I'm actually in the process of reading through a huge stack of Warhammer 40k books I picked up.

Honestly never heard of this trilogy, will put put it in my to-look-at list.

J.G. Ballard is IMO unsurpassed. His early "pure" SF, mostly in short story form, is gripping and unique. His later body of work contains some of the best fiction of the 20th century, although it is less conventionally SF.

I'll also, arbitrarily, mention A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller. That's less well written, but an interesting cult classic.

closest to Science Fiction I got on book would be the Vampire Hunter D novels, consider it's taking place in a post-apolalyptic world where Vampires with advanced technology just fell dwon their high horse, sort of :P

I really like Fantasy and Science Fiction books of the Hohlbein couple. I don't know if they sell books outside Germany.

I don't really read too much Science Fiction, but Iain M Banks 'Culture' books are amazing.

Haha the raunchy stuff didn't bother me really. Doesn't go overboard with it and I think it helps with the character development. I haven't read that no, will check it out. :) This was the first of his I've read.

You definitely should man, it's superb. I've read a few 40k books actually, there is some good reads to be found. I'll have a look at which ones I have later, can't remember the titles any more.

It was a pretty big game but then it is from the early nineties! Seems it was "loosely" based on the novel according to a Google search.

Frank Herberts Dune is great, but a very tough read, might be easier to watch the film or many tv series first just to get an idea of the "universe". The Hyperion trilogy by Dan Simmons, is also worth a read.

I will give those Peter F. Hamilton books a try...When I find the time!

As for you fantasy readers I would recommend picking up Andrzej Sapkowski's The Last Wish.

2nded on Greg Egan. Diaspora, Permutation City and Zendegi are all amazing reads. Also really enjoyed Idlewild by Nick Sagan, the rest if the Trilogy was worth reading but lacked the magic of the first. Also, William Gibson needs a mention, Neuromancer was well ahead of its time.
