Really considering getting one, haven't had a new phone since the Samsung D900. It's probably the only phone since the D900 that made me go 'I want that phone'.
How much better are phones these days? Don't really intend to play games, internet access seems good though, can see myself using that a lot when I'm out and about.
Will probably get it on contract, the phone itself will be 'free'. Never had a contract phone before, but I can't imagine them going "here's a 500 phone, just pay us 36 pound a month", is there hidden fees or anything?

No.
No. But the phone isn't free so much. part of the monthly payments go towards the phone. The different plans for credit is pretty much the free part. It costs them next to nothing to use the network and can charge you whatever they want to cover the cost of the phone.
Having said that, I have the S2. 4.2 inch screen is bearable, but big. 4.8in is borderline retarded.

I thought the same thing for a while, was even scared to carry in my pants pockets in case I broke it but I got used to it and so did my pockets and it's all good :)
When I see an iphone now it looks soooooo tiny.

Each to their own, iphones are great if you own a mac laptop and you're entirely a mac user... it blends very well... I just find being a windows user you only get about 60% of what a mac user gets from the entire "apple thing"... since I don't want to spend 2000 dollars or something for the "apple experience", android and open source suited me much better.

I don't own a mac either and I never plug my iPhone into my PC only for jailbreak purposes
I find android very buggy... Androids are good at first.... Wait 12 months down the line

android feels buggy because it's not easy to optimize a system for differnt hardwares. Windows still has that problem, tho it's better in the core compared to 98/XP was.

Use v4, it shits all over v2 of the OS, never had any problems, I even have a cheap ass tablet running v4... totally love it. I'm not one to praise something just because I bought it.... it took me a while to adjust to the features, but I'm much happier without my iphone... I love how you can customize the crap out of the desktop and get to things quicker.
