Hello,

My name is Michael and I'm really interested in the (happy) hardcore scene. I used to be fairly familiar with the music back in the 90s when I was at school, so I have some happy memories of it, but I never really got involved with the scene and I feel like it passed me by a bit.

I'm doing a project for my university course about the hardcore scene, specifically how the community works on the internet (like on this forum) and the local scene in the North East of England where I live, and I need some help with it.

If there are any active producers, DJs, MCs, or just anyone at all involved in making the scene what it is both online and at events that wouldn't mind answering a couple of questions, give me a shout on [email protected] - in the meantime I'll be checking out the forum to see what hardcore's all about in 2012.

Cheers!

Michael

Well, hardcore on THIS site is all about 40% throwing insults at each other and 60% threads complaining about how the genre is changing.

Seriously though, do you have any question about us right off the bat? I'd be happy to answer.

Shut it dickhead.

Used to be much better in the old days.

Yeah, listing some questions here will get a much bigger response.

What kind of project? Would it be something we get to see/read?

Definitely, it wouldn't be right to hide my work away if someone on the forum that had a hand in it wanted to read my report.

Like I say, I'm looking for producers, DJs, MCs, promoters, or just listeners to answer one or two questions. Nothing massively serious!

Hello again,

Here are a few questions - no stress if you'd rather leave some out but feel free to pull no punches with the answers if you have something that you want to say.

(To producers, mostly) - To what extent does the environment in which you live affect the music you produce?

Do you attend live events?

How would you describe the atmosphere at such an event? How do these events differ from other, more mainstream club nights?

Do you know much about Sunderland's now-closed New Monkey club? If so, was that place a reliable example of what you think the scene is?

I remember back in the nineties that mixes were exchanged on cassette format. Does anyone still do this, or have CDs completely taken over? How much music is shared in physical formats like tapes and CDs versus websites like SoundCloud?

What can you tell me about the different sub-genres within hardcore?

(To MCs in particular, but anyone really) - Does the lyrical content in samples or rhymes in MC'ing carry any meaning to you? Can you relate to it at all? Do you have an attachment to any songs in particular for the lyrics?

I suppose the reason I'm doing this project is to explore what I think might be a misunderstood scene and also to appreciate the music that I think is undervalued.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the interest.

Michael

Just going to give this thread a bump to see if anyone would you like to answer any of the questions above?

Also, I think I'll be going to this in April:

Good idea?

Cheers!

Im starting to feel pretty bad no one else will answer your questions, so I'll try my best.
The environment I live in in the sense of where and how I grew up influenced me as a producer monumentally. Even though I've only just started, I have an extensive musical background due to my parents, and it's made constructing melodies and rhythms very easy for me. I'd also assume the general area of where you live would affect it. If you grow up in a town heavily influenced by, say, reggae, you'd probably hear some elements of that in their music.
-

As far as I know, to the younger generation of ravers, if they were handed a casette, they wouldn't know what to do with it. Casettes are really dying off, and I'd say CDs dominate the genre in physical terms.

However, I'd say online outweights physical copies for multiple reasons.
It's cheaper, takes less time, and you can't break an internet address in a rough crowd.
Plus, it's much more viable and interactive. If you hear a casettte with a song you love, you maybe play it for your friend the next time he's over, or you share it with a promoter.
If you go to a soundcloud, you can comment on the song, you can follow the artist, you can contact the artist, and so on.

That being said, even then the ability to rip CDs is still out there. If S3rl hands some random raver a promo CD with exclusive songs, that guy is 90% of the time going to go right upload it online.

Off the top of my head, there are 2 main subgenres of hardcore - Breakbeat and Electro
Breakbeat hardcore is focused around a full break rather than just the kick. It also generally uses less offbeat bass and more full measure sines. It's often accompanied with rapping (Not just MCing, full on rap.)
Heres a few good examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atD3Qoh74xE

On the other hand, there can also be more calm, oldskool type breakbeat, such as this:

Electro hardcore is hardcore with dubstep, drumstep, and electro influences. It usually has a normal riff-type breakdown, but features a very electro style drop.
