Hi everyone,

I'll get a new computer for my birthday ans was asked, what software I need. The problem is, that I suck very much when it comes to such things and don't know anything about, what's available today.
My main focus would be
- using an IRC-chat-program (like MIrc).
- an alternative for Windows Media Player. Someone mentioned a program called Ultramixer to me.
- copy CD-tracks to the computer in wave-quality (Audiograbber?).

Have you made experiences with these programs or alternatives?

I used to use KVirc, it's free.

Just curious, but what OS are you running right now? Windows Media Player 12 on Win7 is actually very good, and can rip audio in .WAV

From what I remember about WMP is that you were always able to rip music to WAV. WMP gets a lot of negative feedback but I've never had a problem with it, but then again I rarely use it for anything more than just a player, ripper, and cd burner.

You can always try using Switch Sound File Converter to convert some of your files into WAV. But it won't make the quality that much better overall if it's already shit quality to begin with in MP3.

Foobar or VLC are good media players. Foobar is lightweight and VLC is versatile. Audiograbber works very nicely to rip CDs and the autoDB built in is very nice as well.

I should be far more concerned with the Hardware really, that's the important thing. ;)

It wouldn't improve them at all infact. :P It's the audio equivalent of taking a picture on a shit camera and then taking a picture of said picture with a good camera.

I do use SSFC to comvert WAVS into mp3 though, handy little free program.

WMP player is fine though yeah, you can rip in WAV no problem. The only time it's crap is trying to burn a mix with split tracks as it'll drop a short gap in between each one. I use something else to do this but I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head! Will check when I get in. Is a freebie as well.

Don't use any chat programs so can't help with that.

What I use;
Audio player: foobar2000 for all my albums, winamp for the odd files from the internet and radio
Video player: VLC and sometimes Windows Media Player when VLC can't play the files (WMP can handle shitty files better).
CD ripper: Windows Media Player.

I've used both XiRCON and Quassel for IRC in the past. Currently I use X-Chat 2. All are pretty basic and easy to use, and X-chat is really good with multiple servers/channels. Never got into mIRC. I suppose it's because of that annoying guy popping up demanding money every time I started it.

As for an alternative for WMP, I use Media Player Classic (MPC) with the K-lite codec pack. I hear the CCCP codec pack is a bit better, and there are some others out there that will allow you to play about any video codec/format you want. VLC is a good one too. It's popular because it's lite on resources.

As for CD to WAV ripping, Winamp does a good job at it, as do others since WAV is really just one quality/bitrate setting and doesn't have to be tweaked like MP3 or ACC+.
