Right, I'm after some advice.
I got a new PC recently and I've got a problem with my PCI-E and PCI slots. The way they are laid out on the MB is really stupid. They are too close to each other so I can't fit both my graphics card and my sound card in at the same time. Now, what I'm asking for is advice on either how to make my sound or graphics card external or how to extend the MB slots so the ports are far enough apart to fit both cards. I've looked at risers but I can't see how the outputs would be usable through the backplate.

The gap between the slots is standardized (ATX, mATX, ITX etc), the manufacturer of your grpahics and sound cards have probably ignored the size requirements for these slots. If you have an ATX MB (not mATX), can't you just use the lower slots for the sound card?
If you move these slots, then the case wont fit them properly on the back side.

It's this MB:
As you can see the slots are too close (well, when the graphics card is in) and I can't see a way to expand the MB in anyway.

That looks like a weird mATX MB the slots are always as close as they are in that MB. However usually theres 2 of the smaller slots between the 2 bigger ones on micro ATX motherboards.
If your case is ATX sized, buy something that can move the slot, then you can move it to the other slots in the case. As there should be 2-3 unused slots (in the case) under the MB. Dealextreme would be your best bet. Something like that?

Let me get this straight, with that PCI/PCI Ribbon Cable I can plut it into the slot on the MB then the card goes in the other end. Then just connect it through the back plate lower down in the case? If so you're my hero!

I've just a look online now and I'm going to go for this: http://www.woomaa.com/en-gbp/pci-e-pci-express-16x-riser-card-extender-ribbon-cable-p10664.html I need to move the graphics card not the sound card because it's the heat sink on the GPU that's covering the PCI slot. Cheers Whispering.

mini-ATX aren't meant to have much stuff connected to it. I believe the PCI slots are meant to be used by one thing only. The PCI is only there for legacy/backcompability reasons. Also, aren't mini-atx usually more expensive, compared to what you can get on a standard ATX MB?
and man, didn't know there where extenders for PCI-E aswell. I had a PCI extended for my barebone, which also split into 2 to be mounted on the side.

No problem, hope you can get it working. Though the one you linked was 15cm long, if you have to go over the sound card (blocking air vent.) and down the case, i think its not long enough.

Same price, sometimes cheaper.

Exactly this. Mini-ATX aren't really meant for an actual gaming rig. The slots are really for show, imho, and only really good for maybe a soundcard at best. You'd want an actual full ATX board, mostly just for the space for multiple cards (SLI / CrossFire) or graphics/sound cards. Plus they support more RAM slots so you can buy cheaper 4 x 2GB RAM packages, etc.

It was bound to happen.

I've used mATX MB's a lot. They've all been exactly same specced as the ATX ones, just with fewer PCI/PCI-E slots. Which i don't use much anyway (and id say 95% of users only have graphics card these days, when everything else is integrated to the MB).

I didn't say it was any slower though. Just saying you'd want the bigger board for the more space and slots. And you'd want it especially if you want to do gaming for the larger, more powerful, video cards or something like video rendering for RAM slots.

I don't either, I've never had a reason to. But it was just a general reason why you'd want a larger board.

But in all my mATX MB's the GPU slot has been as big and fast as in ATX MB's, and i've always had 4 ram slots.
mATX usually looks like that:
