I graduate this coming Spring with my Bachelor's in teaching, and I am willing to move, and plan to, to get a job. At the moment, both me and my mom are living with her parents. I don't know what's going to happen to my mom after my grandparents pass on. She has abused prescription pain killers for...pretty much my whole life (I'm 24). She has no job (she's been fired from every job she's had due to abusing pain killers), no money, no insurance on her car, and only a small education in nursing from the 80s. Her mind isn't the best anymore either due to all the drug abuse. I don't want to be the one that has to financially keep her up after my grandparents pass on. I also don't want her to have to live with me. I know I won't be able to afford any assistant living housing for her. So...what do I do?

I'm in a similar situation albeit not as bad. My parents are splitting and selling our house and I'm taking it as an opportunity to move out and start my own life. Problem is my mum isn't handling all of it too well and I have this fear that she's just going to give up. I can't live with her forever because I need to start my own life and I'm only just going to be financially.capable of keeping myself.above water. I couldn't support someone else as well. Lucky for me, our house is worth like 2 mil.and shell be fine financially.
My situation is nowhere near as bad as yours and I dunno how to handle mine so
. Good luck!

If it was me....?
I'd move out before my grandparents became incapable or died.
When that sad day comes your mother will finally have to take responsibility for herself.
She chose her way of life, it really isn't down to you to support it.
I could be wrong.

I totally agree with you, and I am planning on moving out next year, hopefully if I hear of a teaching job for the Fall. I'm just worried that she won't be able to get a job due to her record, and the fact that she has no money (besides what my grandparents are leaving her in the Will), or car insurance (but she can drive my grandparents' car if she needs to). She also has no computer skills because the only time she ever wants to get on my old laptop is when she's doped up, so she can never remember anything to do (which led to her crashing it and I will not allow her to touch my new laptop). I just want to have my own life and not have to her caretaker.

I agree with this. clearly she's received enough help, more than she deserves I imagine.

warped: Sorry to be so blunt, your mom needs to grow up and not expect you and your grandmother to live off. She needs to get sober on her own terms, tough love is what she needs. Seems your the adult in the family.
Andy: I'm assuming your parents bought the house like 20 years ago for like 100,000 and now it's worth 2 million after that time... The house prices in Australia are through the sky.
