Especially if you think about how far back the Mayans created the calender.. 2012 was a really long ****ing time away! So they ended it and probably would just create a new one at the time, or reset it.

Yeah they had a calendar for hundreds of years into the future, surely they were well set for a time and took a break :P then the Spaniards killed em before they could continue.

Visit another country, weighting between Korea and Iceland. Stop doing so much work. Stop spending money on stuff that are only minor improvements of what i already have.

The Mayan people calculated there should be a regular galaxy arrangement in 2012. As they were superstitious, they probably understood it as world's end. That's why their calendar ends in 2012.

This.
The religious Zeitgeist movie on YT explains it well.

According to this article:
quote: The date was "a reflection of the day of creation", Mayan codes researcher Sven Gronemeyer told AP.
The day also marked the return of a Mayan god, Mr Gronemeyer added.
Bolon Yokte, the god of creation and war, was expected to return, according to Mr Gronemeyer's reading of a Mayan text carved into stone 1,300 years ago.
...
Only two out of 15,000 registered Mayan texts mention the date 2012, according to the Institute, and no Mayan text predicts the end of the world.
