What's crackin' everyone? Welcome to Saiyan's Weekly Mixes! For the next five (or more) weeks, I'll be posting a new mix in this thread every single Friday!

This week is Sort of Not Really Live Volume 8 - Nu Breed - Hadokoa Budokai. This is a studio recreation of my set from an awesome event in Seattle, Washington on March 26th 2010. For this one, I tried to play at least one track from every style of hardcore I own, from oldschool to speedcore. I'm pretty sure I got them all.

Unfortunately, after I recorded it I found out that one of the tracks I played had to be removed as it had been submitted for a compilation album, and it being on this mix could potentially hurt its chances of being chosen. Rather than record the mix over again I just chopped it out, and added something funny in its place, so watch out for that. Anyways, on to the good stuff!

May 7th: What The F*ck is a Purist, Anyway? (freeform)
May 14th: Matter's Badass Grandma (upfront UK hardcore)

You should use soundcould or speedyshare so people can stream it instead of download the whole mix

That's right, hellokitty.com, and don't act like you don't want one too.

If you go to http://deejay-mixes.com/Saiyan all of my more recent mixes (including this one) can be streamed off the player there.

It's that time again! This week's mix is Sort of Not Really Live Volume 9: Sakura-Con 2010. Another studio recreation, this time of the set I played at Sakura-Con in Seattle, Wa, which took place from April 2nd to 4th 2010 and is one of the largest Anime conventions in North America.

How large? Well, my best guess on how many people I played for is around 2000 people. The listed capacity of the room was 5000, and it was about half full, but people were giving themselves to dance. So 2000 seemed like a good number. We (Virus, Dynamic, and I) weren't made of aware of just how huge this was going to be until after we'd arrived in Seattle, we all assumed it was going to be a few hundred, like at AnimeNorth here in Toronto. Had I known beforehand I would've planned something a little more intricate than what I wound up playing. However, what I DID end up playing was pretty good (imo), so I recorded it for you guys. Below is a mix of oldschool eurodance, modern commercial dance, and hardcore. Enjoy!

You've probably noticed by now a few tracks have been on all of the mixes I've posted so far. That's due to all three of these shows being within a short time frame, so there were things I was still playing. I feel there's enough of a difference between each tracklist that a couple common tunes doesn't really matter.

Anyways, that's it for this week! This is the rest of my weekly mix schedule:

May 7th: What The F*ck is a Purist, Anyway? (freeform)
May 14th: Matter's Badass Grandma (upfront UK hardcore)
May 21st: Straight Outta Woodbridge (commercial dance)
May 28th: As yet untitled gabber mix

See y'all next week!

This week's new mix is 80 minutes of sweet sweet freeform goodness!

There aren't too many people left around who know this, but when I first started DJing, I originally played freeform (though people were still calling it trancecore at the time). I had first got turned onto it by a random unlabeled CD somebody gave me, and then a bunch of amazing sets by Hujib (of Next Generation/Blatant Beats) in the basement of Stardust (one of the dirtiest venues in Toronto history) sealed the deal.

Over the years freeform and I sort of parted ways. I still bought and played freeform tunes every now and then, but into the early-mid 2000s the genre as a whole just sort of lost its appeal. To quote a popular cliche, "they just don't make em like they used to". For every good release, there were a pile of bad ones. Not a good period.

Over the past few years I've been finding myself getting back into it, as more and more quality tunes have been released. But now, here in 2010, something confuses me. See back when I started playing it, it was still being referred to as trancecore. The name change to freeform came shortly thereafter. The reasoning behind the name change was apparently to differentiate it from trance, and that name was chosen because it was supposed to be music that was "free of form", free of the constraints that were present in "happy" hardcore at the time. Harder edged music free of cheesy chipmunked female vocals. Something different.

Now there's this whole thing with people referring to themselves as freeform "purists", and "purist" mixes of tracks, and certain tracks in general being referred to as "purist" freeform. This irks me. Why is this specific freeform supposed to be more "pure" than......what? The stuff other people are writing? How is it that this music, which is supposed to be "free of form", is more "pure" than this other music, which is also "free of form". If it's all freeform, how can any of it be more "pure" than the rest? That makes about as much sense as stabbing myself in the testicles over and over again with a screwdriver. Phillips head.

So somebody explain this to me, cause I really don't get it. I ask you, boys and girls:

Not too much to say this week. With this one I set out to make a mix not unlike Two Talls and I'm Drunk. Just a fun, bouncy mix of recent hardcore. Enjoy!

Want another mix? Well I'm gonna give it to you, and it's not even Friday!

Here's the deal, I entered a mix contest put on by Pioneer and http://letsmix.com to win a pair of CDJ-900s and a pair of HDJ-1000 headphones.

You can listen and vote on it here: http://www.letsmix.com/mix/41887

If I get 50 ratings by May 24th, I qualify to be judged by a jury consisting of representatives from Pioneer, Let's Mix, and special guest juror DJ Kutski.

So please, give it a listen and vote!

If I qualify I may just have some treats for you. ;)

I'm sorry, what?

You're going to have to be a bit more specific than that.

Bad how?

I've listened to that mix extensively. I'll admit there are a couple I could've done better (911 into Hey Jude springs to mind), but the mix as a whole isn't "bad". At least I don't think so.

Try one of the others, you'll probably find something more to your liking.

But but you hurted my feelings!

lol j/k. On to the next mix!

**********

Woodbridge. Home to the highest concentration of ginos, guidos, Honda Civics and fake tans this side of the Jersey Shore.

The following mix is the perfect accompaniment to a regular day in the life of a Woodbridge resident, be it sitting in front of Tim Horton's showing off the grotequely overpowered engine you just put in your Civic, or cruising down Woodbridge Ave rattling windows with your sub that could double as a jet engine.

Enjoy!

May 28th: Variable Threat Response (gabber)
June 5th: An Introduction To Vocal Hardcore (40 vocal anthems in 80 minutes)
June 12: Pioneer Spring Hardcore Session (Pioneer DJ Network May contest entry)

By the way, if you haven't yet please check out Pioneer Spring Hardcore Session at http://www.letsmix.com/mix/41887 and give it a rating! It's my entry in a contest to win a pair of CDJ-900s. Papa needs new CDJs!
