Hello,
I am looking to start producing my own music. I am planning on starting off with FL Studio to learn the basics, and will then hopefully move on to something like cubase.
My question is this: How do you transfer the midi sounds you create on an electric keyboard to a program like FL? Do I need to buy a special keyboard that can connect to your computer and save as a midi? Do I need any additional pieces of equipment for this? Can anyone reccomend any good keyboards or anything else that I will need for this?
My budget is quite low, and top quality is not a must for me.
I have searched online for hours, but have just gotten lost in a huge maze of info. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You have been PM'ed :p.
Also, will any electric keyboard be capable of saving to midi on a computer? I know pretty much nothing about this stuff, and I'm afraid that I'll buy something that doesn't do what I need it to do.

Nah, you at least need a keyboard that will transmit midi, but ideally a midi controller. After that, you need a midi interface, so that you can connect your keybourd/controller midi out into your sound card via the joystick port (unless it is a proffesional sound card that already has midi in/outputs, otherwise it will just have a normal joystick port).

Thanks for the info.
I have been reading about a few midi controllers that say they are USB Powered, such as this one:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Keystation61es/ Does this mean that I can plug it into my USB port, and it will function fine? I would like to avoid buying a MIDI interface just to plug it in, but I will if neccessary.

You can get new interfaces for around £8 on ebay, or around £14 elsewhere :) But i forgot that if your only using a midi controller then yeah it transmits midi via USB. That controller (and others) also has a midi out port on it, so eliminates the need for a midi interface for midi instruments :)
You won't need this, but since i mentioned it i should also put a link to it:

Alright, cool.
So if I buy a midi controller, I will be able to plug it into a USB port, and save the music that I make as a midi file on my computer, right? I just want to make 100% sure before I go and buy this thing.
I will most likely be buying a 61 key controller, but I'm not completely sure if that would be best. The full 88 seems exsesive though.
I will most likely be buying this:

The midi controller itself makes no sound. That's littery what it is: a controller. It is used to controlled other midi instruments (either virtual synths (software synths), or hardware ones). You can record anything you play on the midi controller onto a midi track in your sequencer, then the midi data recorded will trigger the whatever synth you use for you (so yes it will work the same as a midi file).
If your using a hardware synth, you need audio cables going from the line out of the synth into the line in of the sound card, and you need to record the triggered sounds in real time with a wav recorder.

Thanks again for the help.
Looks like I will be going with one of the 2 controllers above, and testing it out in FL. Thanks for clearing up all my confusion :).
