k, so after using a laptop for about half a year (and it has served me quite well - and still will) it is starting to show its limits, the major one being the massive lack of sound quality the inbuilt soundcard has 
basicly im planing on purchasing a full new system 
gonna go for the new intel conroe chips tons of ram ect ect, all fairly top notch stuff, however, im not sure exactly where to go for a decent soundcard!
what i'm looking for is a pci soundcard with a breakout box, that has a master volume knob on it with a headphone jack on the box aswell, and ballanced outputs.
4ins/outs would be enough (not including the headphone jack) as im not planing on buying any of the usual hardware synths..
basicly the only card ive found so far that seems to meet what im lookin for is a soundblaster X-fi elite pro.
its looks like it has everything i want, but im just wondering if anyone knows of anything better that would be in a simialr price range (£100-£150) and have at least all the features i mentioned before! going a little over isnt a problem..
any advice greatly appreciated :)

What are you using it for, music production or just general sound? For music production you should ideally get something by M-Audio, they make proffesional sound cards for producing. Sound Blaster cards are made for gaming etc so not ideal for use with music production :P
