Im wanting to make two cables, one end with 1/4" jack plugs (mono i think) and the other end with open cable that i can twist and put into a thumb screw style connector.
ive found some mono jack plugs on maplin but ive no idea what cable to use?
any help would be greatfully appreciated :)

I take it this is a cable to go from your monitor outs to your amplifier? If your using bare wire into clamps (I forget their proper name!) then it sounds like your going to be using unbalanced leads, in which case all you need is dual core, thick as you like, instrument cable. I can't find the stuff I bought from Maplin - I suggest you go in, the guys on the counter are usually very helpful!. A cheaper (and easier!) option however may be to buy 1 extra long, good quality instrument cable. Cut it exactly halfway down and just strip back the wire. Saves you any soldering work (I hate soldering connectors!) and you get 2 leads sorted in double quick time!
If it is a mixer to amplifier connection however, can you not use a balanced connection?

Alright cheers for the reply!
Im goin to be doin a party in the same place i usually rent out + when i was last in i seen a set of 15" carlsbro speakers and an old 500w amp so im after some wires to hook them up aswell as my own speakers. Im already using XLR out and Booth Out so ill have to use the unbalanced phono out from the mixer to the amp.
The amp is pretty old and has only got them thumb screw connecters to connect it to the speakers. with it being a 500w amp im guessing (im not really sure) that ill need fairly beefy cables? the ones on maplin are only 1mm tops for propper dual core cables, and they will probably snap if they are connected to the thumb screws with it being so thin
ive got some of this cable i used in the setup in my car, do you think it would be good enough to use?

Looks similar to the stuff I've used from my studio amps as speaker cable which I got from Radio Shack.
It *may* do - theres not a huge ampage going from your mixer TO the amp, however, the heavier the cable, the better quality you'll get. Its hard to tell the gauge though from that picture.
You said in your first post 1/4" jacks, but hte last one you said phonos - out of your mixer I take it you mean tphonos, as in your last post?
Maplin do some good quality 10m phono leads - you could always chop these into 2x5m leads?

Should take up to about 15A, which equates to about 500W tops. It'll do, but higher diameter cable would be better.
Also, bear in mind where your going to be laying the cables. 1mm insulation isn't that great if the cables are going to be trodden on all night. You can get protectors for them, but you may be better off getting some tougher cable - you should ring round some PA suppliers perhaps and see what they have.
