What Software/Hardware do all the Hardcore Producers out there use?
& How expensive/effective is it?

Is Cubase commonly used or is Reason 3 more suited to dance music & Hardcore?

There isn't really a set standard as most of the top hardcore producers use samples for percussion and hardware synths such as the virus series and supernova series.
For getting started i'd recommend FL Studio (not sure which is the latest version.)
grab some free vst's and samples off the internet and get practising!
it'll set you back about £100 but it'll keep you occupied for ages.
when you're ready for professional production the strongest choices are cubase, logic, nuendo or reason.
i'm a reason user myself, never looked back.

Cubase, nuendo, logic, reason, even fruitloops.
Cubase is the best sound but also the hardest to master... If you really want to know something interesting Gammer started with fruitloops, now he uses cubase SX.

Cubase sounds no different to Sonar or Logic Audio or even Pro Tools.
Fruity Loops and Reason have their own sounds (imo Reason sounds better) but other than that its down to the interface, and which YOU work better with. Try some demos out of the progs mentioned here.
For what its worth, I lost my cherry using Digital Orchestrator Pro before moving on to Cubasis, followed by Cubase. I then switched over to Logic as it felt more organic to me when using it, and at the time I could customise how I used it more than Cubase.
Right now I'm still using Logic for recording work, but I'm trying to get into Reason as I'm finding Logic offers me too many options when sequencing stuff.

Nuendo basically is cubase but with video capabilities i think, so that'd be harder to master than cubase :]
It all depends on what functions you use, some people don't have a clue when it comes to the rack wiring on reason and prefer cubase, some people prefer reason because it has more of a hardware feel.
if you want to know something really interesting, i started on dance ejay ;)

I Started on "Music 2000" on the PS1! lol
I was using logic today in the apple shop (Bullring, Birmingham)... couldn’t get the midi controller to work though... I was on it for ages tweaking settings and trying to find the source of the problem... when some **** basically came over and said "you've been it for 20 minutes - F*CK OFF!!!" (He may aswell av! lol)
lol it really doesn't seam my type of interface at all...
I like cubase... It just confuses me, but I know for a fact if I put the effort in I could learn to love it!
Not a fan of reason - it takes to long to learn basic stuff! Like looping a pattern for example!
And having to click on a different icon to erase notes and then another one to draw... and ANOTHER one to move them!
^^^ it just seams rather pointless as I'm too used to the good old right click to delete, left click to draw in FL!
Besides... at the moment my music couldn't be doing better! Its coming along really great and I'm producing some outstanding tracks... still need to work on my mastering a little, I think there’s 1 or 2 little tricks and features I don't know about yet that could just make the mix sound so much more clear and fresh! But it’s not really important at the moment!
For now I just want to get some stuff out lol...
And I've got a label intressed in some funky house (Evan tho i don't like funky house lol)
Come the new year, early 2007... will be the time when I’ll start to teach myself in depth knowledge of studio hardware, and how things work together... as well as learn a new interface maybe?
But for now... I'm Happy with FL! There’s nothing wrong with it!
It has everything a professional would need to "Get The Job Done!"
Certain people will mock it because it isn’t as complex as other interfaces and for the fact that’s it’s the "easiest" to just "pick up and use"
Frankly they can suck my dick!!!
Simple interface – easy to reach tools and features…
^^^ That’s a good thing? Isn’t it?
And out of all the interfaces I’ve used… FL is the one that stands out for it!
Evan stuff like being able to use your CPU keyboard as a midi controller! – Pure Genius
