baldo talib kweli is one of my favourites aswell as common's early stuff. ice cubes first few albums are good, amerikkka's most wanted and death certificate. mainly about discrimination on blacks, whether you take his point of view or not, i prefer listening to it than "i got the most bling and a big thing, thats why the hoes love me!". nas - illmatic is a fantastic album aswell
i haven't listened to rap for a long time and really fallen out of touch so i wouldn't know of any decent new artists

Blinded by the lights is definitely a 'CHOON'. Excellent lyrics.

The Streets...
I love him...(its one guy I believe)
My favorites are Stay Positive, Same Old Thing, Its Too Late,
pretty much all of Original Pirate Material.
Baldo, your comment about American hip hop being all about violence isn't excactly correct. Artists like Common, Talib Kwali, Dead Prez, Blackalicious (my favorite) Jurassic 5, and others reflect a postive side of hip hop that is about social concsience and the lyrics are brilliant.
If you every get a chance, or if it ever gets to the UK, you should check out Dave Chapelle's Block Party (a concert film that features a lot of the artists I just mentioned.)
EDIT: I forgot The Roots. And Mos Def.

I read some stuff he wrote on his webiste (mike skinner) & it turns out the rumours that he ripped off his mates ideas & material is true with the first album.
I liked the first album. But the second album is very poor in comaprison. Very Chaz & Dave.. it has no flow to it & the lyrics arent as inspired as the first.
My fave tracks off the first are The Irony Of It All, Weak Become Heros & Same Old Thing.
So I told him '**** with me and you won’t live'
Then I smacked him in the head and downed another Carling
Bada bada bing for the lad’s like.
Mad fight, his face’s a sad sight.
Vodka and snake bite.
Feckin excellent
