Multi samples are different versions of the same sample, but at different pitches :)
When you have a short sample, the higher you pitch the sample up, the shorter it gets, and if it's a short sample then you would be able to hear that, you woulnd't want that to happen, but if you have the same sample at a higher pitch, it will be the same length as the other sample at it's original pitch :) Also with some types of sounds, pitching it up or down alot can really change the sound of the sample in a way that you don't want, so having samples at different pitches would solve that problem :)
