You can do that with a sound proccessor called a gate. There is one in Sound Forge, and even though it is a DXi plugin aswell, you can't use it in real time, so you would have to put the FX on in Sound Forge :P

You can use MT Trigger gate: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1185.html
Or something like AMG: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1058.html Which will let you vary the patterns more or you can also use Ducking, with a compressor, but that takes quite a bit of setting up.
