It has been a while since we have talked about Hardcore's routes. Clearly their was a predecessor period which influenced later musicians. Lets have a look and listen to the early electronic music that could have paved a way for a much later sound

......................................

Kraftwerk 1970
If they had raves in 1970 this is what they would have looked like. Apparently recorded in Germany the music would have sounded completely daft back then and still sounds daft now but it was an experimental type of music and by the looks of things some of the crowd are enjoying it!

There is a lot of credit to Kraftwerk for their type of music but I am still not familier with them but the age of music and the fact this was filmed makes it worth a mention.

Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 1973

A very haunting piece of music and practically experimental in scale. This gives a very eerie view to the future.

Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxyg?ne (Part IV) 1976
Perhaps one of the most influential pieces of music of all time. This still sounds fresh even today and it appears that it was simply made in a kitchen in Paris. From very humble beginnings this sound seemed to started something but it would be years before anything could match this on scale.

Donna Summer - I Feel Love

Everyone knows this one. It is nice and steady with with vocals creating a perfect atmosphere. Sampled a lot and no doubt influenced a lot of future productions.

Kraftwerk - The Robots 1978
You can hear some of the 80s creeping in here

PIGBAG - Papa's got a brand new pigbag 1980

The into to this shows that something big is about to happen. Another of those very recognisable floor fillers coming on.

Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger 1982

Of course everyone knows this one. It would usually be classed as rock but the guitar line at the beginning would sound ace if sampled 8-10 years later in an early rave release. Most of the credit goes to the vocals but that guitar in the background is what haunts this the most for me.

Yazoo - Don't Go 1982

Another of those tracks years ahead of it's time. A perfect combination of sounds and vocals. Synth Pop was a clear influence of the later House, Euro Dance and Hardcore scenes.

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) 1982

If you haven't heard this one then you are in the wrong room. There has been a number of remixes of this including one from 1989 with break samples and other effects in it so the influence on later sounds is clear. I have heard some pretty good 'club mixes' of this from the 2000s as well.

Real Life - Send me an Angel 1983

This one has the 80s written all over it. Aside from the recognisable lyrics the angelic voices in the background make me think of the dreamier forms of Trance that would appear years later. Very haunting melodies with this one.

A-ha - Take On Me 1984

A fine piece of music which everyone knows. Even Hixxy had his own (unreleased) version on Bonkers. The sample has been used quite a few times over the years. Perhaps the most Synth Pop of all Synth Pop!

John Rocca - Once Upon A Time (Once Upon A Dub) 1984

A bit different this one. Things where very experimental by this point and there was a lot of new people coming out with new sounds. The varied use of the samples seems to be a trademark of the era

Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F 1984

Another sound track. This version is notably slow compared to later releases. Of course a lot of people associated with 'Crazy Frog' in 2005. Wait until 52 seconds in. You could speed that up and fit it into an early 90s hit easily!

KOTO - Visitors 1985

Perhaps one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made. The Italians always made good music This would have been ground-breaking for anyone who first heard it. A nod to some of the works shared further up the post.

Doug E Fresh & Slick Rick - The Show 1985

In the background Hip Hop was also growing which undoubtedly would eventually have an influence of the rave scene at least for the breakbeats. Fresh out of New York, here with have a very traditional form of Hip Hop that also follows the 80s trend of using various random samples. You might recognise some of samples here.

Salt-N-Pepa - Push It 1986

While Hip Hop was originally male dominated Salt and Pepper broke through with this masterpiece. A very groovy release that everyone recognises.

DJ Fast Eddie, Kenny 'Jammin' Jason - Can U Dance 1987

Things starting to get more serious here. The House scene was breaking through and music started getting more sophisticated and funky. I like this one and although it is not quite Hardcore it sounds like a worthy predecessor

Reese & Santonio 1988

A nice Ravey intro in here. Things start sounding more darker around this point. DJ Wishdokta has an awesome remix of this on Naughty Naught 9 which is slightly faster and heavy on the breaks. This version here is the original.

The KLF - What Time Is Love? (Pure Trance 1) 1988

Now imagine this being dropped at a rave in 1988! Said to be one of the earliest forms of Trance. Very space like and probably had a lot of face chewing going on in the crowd!

The KLF - 3:AM Eternal (Pure Trance Original) 1988

Also from KLF. This one is absolutely beautiful!

Inner City - Do You Love What You Feel (Power 41 Remix) 1989

You can imagine that the crowed started to go wild when this came on! Nice piano in here and those vocals are just plain hot!

Rhythm Device - Acid Rock 1989

Perhaps the first release that could be accepted as Hardcore. The electric guitar samples where a prominent feature of early Belgium Techno

Space Opera Space 3001 1989

A rather spacey tune. Some hints of the Trance sound can be heard here. The main rift is just menacing however as it cuts in an out.

Success-N-Effect - Roll It Up (Bass Kickin Beats) 1989

There seems to be different versions of this and I am not sure which is original but it is one of the first fully breakbeat releases for the rave scene. Carl Cox has a well known remix from 1991 featuring the detuned piano stab. This is the real Amen Break as well so it is 100% pure breakbeat

Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco 1990

Coming into the 90s the bleeps were popular. This was the most bleep of all bleeps!

Joey Beltram - Energy Flash 1990

Getting a bit more stomping now but still slower than what was to come. A very famous release with a lot of familiar samples.

LFO - LFO 1990

Another classic that everyone knows. Features some more bleeps, dreamy pads and the heavy bass

Quadrophonia - Quadrophonia 1990

I think that it is safe to say that Hardcore has arrived by this point. The famous stab is just haunting. This one seems to be the original but there are variations

Lenny Dee Ice - We Are IE

The into to this is another haunting one. Early use of the Amen break here and a huge bassline. One of the earliest forms of Jungle.

T99 - Anasthasia 1991

Very noisy this has to be the most Belgium of all Belgium it seems. This is just plain haunting. The sound has been sampled many times as well

DJ Carl Cox - I Want You (Forever) 1991

More Amen breaks in here along with some electric guitars, pianos, pads and some very fine vocals. One of Carl's finest works.

DJ Seduction - Hardcore Heaven

And here we have it. One of the most known releases of the early 90s. This was very well played out. Quite clearly Seduction knew what the crowd wanted so he made this.

Anything else deserve a mention?
